This piece is a highly simplified and abstracted painting that still seems to ooze significance in it’s distillation of a landscape. There is the barest suggestion of sky and land with much bare board left unpainted, and the brushstrokes move through this space like a lumbering animal.
Many of these pieces have developed over the years from initial unresolved studies that responded to the landscape features of the Chilterns. From there they are abstracted into more imaginary and expressive pieces that are more about mood and atmosphere than any specific place. These pieces are dark and foreboding landscapes where skies are sullied and elements melt into one another.
I have a fascination for the moments when the day fades into night when details become lost, but the experience seems heightened.
