Oil on Glass

900 x 700 mm

This is an amalgamated 180 degree view of Canary Wharf from Greenwich Observatory in the glass series that explored a variety of views of Docklands that incorporated both modern and historical aspects.

The physical nature of the glass surface in these paintings responds perfectly to the illusory and reflective nature of the changing light and space. Certain elements such as the foreground and skies are painted on the reverse of the glass and the buildings and clouds for example on the front, so that there is a physical spatial depth within the piece that echoes the reality of the experience.

It causes me to deconstruct a place as I’m painting it, sometimes employing a process in reverse on the back of the glass with the hues applied first, base paints last, so that it all comes together in the eye in the correct order. I really feel that I’m getting inside the space painting this way, constructing and building different sections on different levels.
