This is an amalgamated 180 degree view looking north towards the Millennium Dome at the Thames Barrier in the glass series that explored an alternative view of London incorporating the old workings on the banks of the Thames.
The physical nature of the glass surface in these paintings responds perfectly to the illusory and reflective nature of the water and the changing light and space. Certain elements such as the water and skies are painted on the reverse of the glass and the buildings on the front, so that there is a physical spatial depth within the piece that echoes the reality of the experience.
It causes me to deconstruct a place as I’m painting it, sometimes employing a process in reverse on the back of the glass with the hues applied first, base paints last, so that it all comes together in the eye in the correct order. I really feel that I’m getting inside the space painting this way, constructing and building different sections on different levels.
